  • Neither the number of people suffering from food insecurity nor acute malnutrition rates have changed significantly compared to last year. This year about 471,000 people are experiencing a marked lean season, particularly in pastoral areas (area of transhumance pastoral and agropastoral west) and agricultural areas (the center of the river valley and the rainfed area) and in the suburbs of large cities. Food assistance, needed between August and September, can strengthen the workforce of rural households and reduce the time required to search for income to purchase food. In other rural areas, food security is at seasonal levels. In contrast, for the 20,000 poor urban households, higher prices combined with lower incomes and lack of new income generating activities have resulted in reduced food access. Food assistance is needed pending the establishment of the economic stimulus package that the government intends to develop with financial support recently pledged by donors in Brussels.
  • Despite an early start to the rainfall, some dry spells have affected pasture and seedlings planted in June, outside of low pressure areas. The lean season, which ends in September normally, will last until October in the transhumance, central valley, north and west of the agropastoral zone. Levels of food security are therefore not expected to improve by October. If the resumption of rainfall recorded during the first dekad of August continues, and the Government's agricultural recovery program proceeds normally, these areas will be food secure from October to December 2010.
