  • In the Sahel and the northern the Sudanian zone, the lean season is at its peak. The new crop of tubers, maize and groundnuts from the southern bimodal zone is arriving to market, improving food supply in the area. High food insecurity persists in northeastern Mali, in the agro-pastoral Niger, and in the extreme northeast of Nigeria due to poor agro-pastoral production last year. In Chad, these conditions and insufficient assistance led to extreme food insecurity in parts of the center of the country.
  • Agro-pastoral production prospects for the 2010/2011 consumption year look good in most of the region. Beginning in September, food security conditions improve markedly throughout the region. Market supplies will be abundant as harvests progress. Prices, which are already stable, will begin their seasonal decline, thereby improving access to food for most households. Current moderate and high food insecurity in the Sahel will improve gradually to widespread no acute food insecurity from October to December 2010 with the spread of rain-fed harvests, flood-recession and off-season harvests, increased milk production, improved animal body conditions, and high demand for agricultural labor.
