About |  The FEWS NET Approach

FEWS NET?s approach is guided by several main pillars that all support our core objectives. These include:

Continued production of high quality targeted early warning information. FEWS NET will continue to provide timely and accurate information to pinpoint and assess emerging or evolving food security problems, using the livelihoods approach combined with in-depth market analysis. FEWS NET will strive to understand the information needs of decision makers and work to ensure the right information is available at the right time, in order to facilitate action to mitigate food insecurity.

Emphasis on developing sustainable networks. FEWS NET will assist in the capacity development of information providers, and promote the inclusion of a broader range of network participants from the United Nations, governments, the private sector, NGOs and civil society.

Emphasis on policy-useful information. Although FEWS NET will continue to monitor emerging and evolving food security problems, increased emphasis will be placed on understanding the underlying causes of food insecurity, and identifying long term development needs. All information will be oriented toward meeting the needs of a broader set of decision makers.

Continued innovation in analytical tools and methods. FEWS NET will continue to be a leader in the development and dissemination of cutting-edge early warning tools and methods.

This approach enables FEWS NET to: strengthen national and regional capacity for early warning and response planning; increase the usefulness of information for decision makers; improve the appropriateness of responses to food security related issues through a better understanding of food insecurity; improve the timeliness of responses to food insecurity, including fostering early policy action; and improve local monitoring and analysis.
