  • A La Nina event has recently been confirmed. La Niña events typically result in above-normal rains in Guatemala, which may be of benefit to corn crops in the dry corridor (although bean crops do not typically benefit from above-normal rains). However, above-normal rains in the south and west of the country could cause low crop yields.
  • Food security countries in the eastern part of the country could improve with the primera harvest, food assistance provided by national and international agencies, and the start of the season for unskilled labor for agricultural activities.
  • In the highlands, which is now facing the annual lean season, food security conditions are expected to improve with the harvest in the last months of the year, although agricultural disease due to accumulated rainfall is expected to result in lower reserves in 2011.
