Despite expected, continued, near average performance of the Gu rains through June, 1.05 million people are projected to remain acutely food insecure. While from July through September, food security outcomes are expected to slightly improve, this will not significantly reduce the populations in Crisis (IPC Phase 3) and Emergency (IPC Phase 4).

Famine-related deaths in Somalia, 2010-2012

From late 2010 to mid 2012, drought, spiraling food prices, conflict, and difficult humanitarian access caused an extended period of famine and severe food insecurity in southern and central Somalia. This FEWS NET/FSNAU-sponsored study, the first evidence-based estimation of the death toll, suggests that some 258,000 lives were lost.
