Livelihood Profiles
In an effort to provide useful livelihoods information, FEWS NET developed a three stage approach based on the Household Economy Approach. The first two stages, Livelihood Zone Maps and Livelihood Zone Profiles, aim to provide the minimum amount of livelihoods information in the immediate term while building the necessary foundation for future Livelihood Baseline development.
Livelihood Profiles validate, refine and add detail to information previously collected during the National Livelihood Zoning Activity. Livelihood Profiles provide the following:
- Wealth breakdown (e.g. poor, middle, better-off) for each livelihood zone based on local determinants of wealth
- The relative importance of different sources of food and income by wealth group and information on market access
- Hazards to which different households are vulnerable
- Seasonal calendars for each livelihood zone
- Zone specific indicators for imminent crisis
What does it help you do?
- Understand how different household types (poor, middle, better-off) will be affected by different hazards (drought, market failure, floods, etc.)
- Identify geographically relevant monitoring indicators and design monitoring systems
- Help interpret trends in monitoring information by season and household type
- Design a livelihoods-based sampling frame for needs assessments
- Target assistance geographically
