In an expansion of its scope, FEWS NET is exploring a systematic approach to incorporating nutritional data into its food security analysis. This effort involves four key activities:
- compilation of historical nutrition and mortality data in countries monitored by FEWS NET
- development of country-specific documents with context on historical patterns of malnutrition and causal analysis
- development of guidance on the inclusion of nutrition and mortality into early warning analysis
- primary data collection in areas of concern
By understanding the nutrition context, food security analysts will have new insight into a population’s vulnerability to shocks and increased ability to make evidence-based assumptions about future food security outcomes.
As an initial step, FEWS NET partnered with Action Against Hunger-UK to assess nutritional status among refugees in South Sudan’s Yida Camp in 2012. More resources will be made available on this page as this important work progresses.
